Archaeology Notes

HY40SE 9 4877 0165.

A mound has been incorporated into the lawn, to the south of the mansion house of Graemeshall, and is surmounted by a flag staff, while the surroundings have been converted into a private putting green.

It is apparently artificial, but its real nature has not been accurately determined.

RCAHMS 1946, visited 6 August 1929.

The flagstaff mentioned above is situated at HY 4877 0165 on top of a slight shapeless mound in a pasture field (to the SE of the lawn at Graemeshall) containing many similar mounds apparently natural. No finds have been reported from this mound and no further information could be obtained concerning its purpose.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (NKB) 28 August 1964.

Activities

Field Visit (May 1979)

Mound is insignificant in size and neat in appearance, as if landscaped. It is topped by a mortared cairn, presumably the flagstaff foundation.

Information from Orkney SMR (RGL) May 79.
