Activities

Field Visit (29 July 2017)

The Murray Fountain was constructed by William Mossman, Sculptor, Glasgow, and there is an inscription attesting to this at the base of its NW corner. Although it is dated 1893, it was installed in 1894. According to an inscription on the N side, it was 'Erected by the inhabitants of the burgh of Crieff - a recognition of the many benefits received from the Murrays of Ochtertyre'. The fountain is now dry and a date of 1993 on stone lid of a dog drinking bowl at the foot of the NW corner represents when the structure was renovated by the local authority. Possibly later than 1993, upward-facing electric lights have been set into the polished stone basin-covers. There are four of these, all originally fed water via a lion-headed spout.
