Archaeology Notes

HY40SE 28 484 004 to 4881 0061

For Italian Chapel see also HY40SE 26

Extensive remains of camps, associated with construction of Churchill causeways (1940). The camp-site at HY 484 004 has concrete hut bases and underground air raid shelters. A similar campsite near the Italian chapel, HY 488 006 housed Italian prisoners.

There are remains of an electricity generating station at HY 4824 0027.

Visited by R G Lamb 1979.

The remains of Camp 60 lie immediately to the S of the Italian Chapel (HY40SE 26) and many concrete hut bases are visible in the field.

At HY 484 004 are several more hut bases can be seen along with the remains of a tramway. In addition several air-raid shelters are still extant in this area. The tramway was used to transport stone from a pier (HY40SE 27.00) to the S end of the Churchill barrier No.1.

Both camps are visible on a RAF vertcial air photograph (106G/Scot/UK137, 3014, flown 3 July 1946).

Visyted by RCAHMS (DE), December 2004
