Activities

Strip And Record (3 June 2024 - 25 June 2024)

NT 24379 74753 A strip, map and sample was undertaken for the area of a groundwater soakaway drainage system at The Grange Club, Portgower Place, Edinburgh. The excavation revealed the remains of the Tin Temple, a late Victorian indoor tennis court that was in use from the late 1870s until it was demolished in 1902. The remains comprised of a stretch of brick and stone foundations for the NW wall of the structure alongside the partial remains of the associated drainage system. The foundations were not substantial, however the 1895 OS Map and a photograph from 1892 show that the structure was supported by wooden struts. There was also evidence of earlier activity on the site with a single cultivation furrow identified beneath the subsoil.
