An archaeological desk-based assessment and evaluation was carried out near here, at No.s 2,4,6 Avon Road and No. 8 Peggy's Mill Road, Barnton, Edinburgh (see NT17NE 280). The site is confined to the gardens of the properties and was carried out ahead of proposed developments on the site. A Roman Road may have passed through the site and a Roman graveyard may have been located along this road. Trial trenches located across the site revealed areas of a linear wall, which appears to be a garden feature or boundary wall. There was evidence that the gardens have been terraced at some point. A 19th century field drain in one trench was found, showing evidence for agricultural activity in the area before the houses were built. No other archaeological features were found at this site.
