Activities

Field Visit (May 1979)

The stone-built mill dam is still obvious below the drained pool, below it the foundations of the mill are concealed under a concrete sheep dip. The iron overshot wheel, by James Abernethy of Aberdeen, is lying jammed in the stream a little downstream of its original position. The spring which supplied the pool was

augmented by water brought in a leat from the headwaters of the Burn of Gangsta. The leat ran into the pool on the N side after contouring the hill, and its course can be traced around the headland, just outside the clifftop fence, at HY 4572 0312. From here its course was NE'wards to capture the burn, its length being at least 700m; it is now obliterated by cultivation. This leat was constructed by Mr Isbister, father of the late Mr P Isbister

who was the present owner's uncle, in cooperation with his neighbour of the farm of Howes, the mill being shared by Howes and Backakelday.
