At NN 0861 7688 on the highest point of the fairly level summit of Cnoc nam Faobh are the remains of a near circular enclosure (Information from Mr A Paton, 28 Clunes Avenue, Fort William). It measures 19.5m E-W by 18.0m withing a wall reduced to an overgrown scarp little more than 0.5m high which gives the enclosure the effect of a slightly raised platform. No facing stones are evident but the impression gained is that the wall did not exceed 2.0m in thickness. The level interior is occupied by trees but is otherwise featureless. The position commands a wide view, but is not of particularly good defensive value, and it cannot be said with certainty that the enclosure is the remains of a dun. Its proximity to Annat (NN07NE 4) is interesting and that it could be the early church site is possible.
Surveyed at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (J M) 10 September 1974.
Field Walking (October 2001)
NN 1191 7702 to NN 0928 7460 A desk-based assessment and walkover survey were carried out in advance of work to lay new sections of water main, totalling approximately 16km, on the N and S shores of Loch Eil. The desk-based assessment identified a single building on the 1st edition OS not noted in the NMRS (NN 0584 7829). The survey identified two sites: a small 19th-century building (NN 0512 7702) and a borrow-pit (NN 0936 7517).
Full report lodged with the NMRS.
