Architecture Notes

HY40NW 14 4129 0653

These are the denuded remains of what may be a salt pan on the foreshore near East Langapool. There is a 7.0m line of rubble wall with two 1.5m convergent walls at the N end forming a 'V'. The structure appears to have been about 2.0m in width. The sketch plan in NMRS MS/500/2/4 also has a note suggesting that it may have been a boat stance (Graham Douglas, April 1982). Correspondence from Chris Whateley at Dundee University (26th April 1982) also suggests that it was not a salt pan, due to the lack of roof evidence and its size. The site is named (as Salt Pan) on the 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey 25-inch map (Orkney, 1881, sheet CVIII.13)
