Archaeology Notes

NX07NE 45.03 centred on NX 0845 7803

Two substantial length of field bank were investigated during the course of a watching brief connected with cable laying operations for the Scotland/Northern Ireland electrical interconnection project.

The banks form part of a small enclosure, extant to a height of 0.5m and a width of 2.7m. Like NX07NE 45.02, these banks were identified in the pre-construction survey and only investigated where they were cut by the cable corridor. The banks were generally of earthen construction containing some large stones directly overlying the gravely grey clay subsoil and no deposits of archaeological significance were encountered.

Parts of a field system are depicted on the OS first edition map (Ayrshire, Sheet LXIX, 1857) and on the 1:10,000 (1979) map adjacent to those described. It is possible that they relate to a later phase of land division.
