Archaeology Notes

NN02SW 12 0347 2438 and 0336 2442

NN 0346 2439. On the end of a slight spur, overlooking the stream Allt Bocain, is an almost square structure. It is set into the ground, the interior being 0.6 metres below existing ground level and the exterior raised 0.5 metres above it. The structure consists of a substantial earthen bank, averaging 3.5 to 4 metres in width, enclosing an area 4.5 metres square. The entrance, facing into the prevailing wind, is in the west side. Attached to the south side, several small stones indicate the remains of an annexe. The excellent condition of the earthen bank suggests that the structure is relatively modern.

Field Visit (2 July 1996)

NN02SW 12 0347 2438 and 0336 2442

This subrectangular enclosure (LORN96 125, NN 0347 2438) is situated on the end of a small spur on the N bank of the Allt Bocain. It measures 6.9m from NE to SW by 6.3m transversely within a turf bank spread to 1.5m in thickness and 0.4m in height. There is an entrance in the NW side and the interior is dished. The fragmentary remains of what may have been a building lie to the SE of the enclosure. The grass-grown terrace to the N and NW of the enclosure bears slight traces of rig, enclosed on the N and E by the remains of a bank that rides up onto the crest of a ridge-top overlooking the terrace from the N. Along the terrace to the W of the cultivated ground there are the turf footings of a subrectangular hut (LORN96 124, NN 0336 2442) that measures 3.3m from ESE to WNW internally; there is an entrance in the NE side.
