Large red ashlar school situated on the E side of Union Street at the junction with Academy Street. Two and three storey blockswith a steeple at SW corner. Inscription 'Riccarton School Board' and carved 'girls' and ' boys' signs above separate entrances. Designed by Andrew and Newlands in 1905.
A school with a different ground plan at this site is depicted as roofed on the 1st and 2nd Editions of the OS 6-inch map (Ayrshire 1860, sheet xviii).
