Field Visit (27 September 2016)

This cast iron mile plate is set against the outside face of a garden wall on the east side of the B833 public road. Rectangular in shape, it measures about 0.68m in height by 0.46m in breadth and 25mm in thickness. Its front face informs the traveller of the distances in miles to Dunbarton (26), Kilcreggan (2) and Coulport (three and a half). Each of these three separate pieces of information is accompanied by a bas-relief hand with a finger pointing in the appropriate direction. The plate must date to the period 1900-1914 because it is not depicted on the second edition of the )S 6-inch map but it is shown on the edition which was revised in 1914 (Dumbartonshire 1923, Sheet nXVI).

Visited by HES, Survey and Recording (JRS, AMcC, AK), 27 September 2016.
