Archaeology Notes

NM92SW 10 9000 2429.

(NM 9000 2429) Cairn (NR).

OS 1:10,000 map, (1974)

This cairn, about 260 metres west of Dalnacabaig farmhouse, is situated on the edge of a level shelf above the flood-plain of the stream Feochan Bheag. A conspicuous oval mound, it measures 19.5 by 17.4 metres and has a maximum height of 2.3 metres. Although almost completely grass-covered, the cairn can be seen to have been bordered by a kerb of massive boulders, particularly well-preserved on the SE arc. On the SW, however, the kerb has been largely removed by stone-robbing.

RCAHMS 1975, visited June 1975.

There is a marked central depression otherwise as described.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (R D) 15 October 1969.

Activities

Field Visit (June 1969)

NM 900 242. This cairn, about 260 metres west of Dalnacabaig farmhouse, is situated on the edge of a level shelf above the flood-plain of the Feochan Bheag. A conspicuous oval mound, it measures 19.5m by 17.4m and has a maximum height of 2.3m. Although almost completely grass-grown at present, the cairn can be seen to have been bordered by a carefully built kerb of massive boulders, particularly well-preserved on the SE arc, where the largest stone is 1.3m long and 0.8m high. On the SW, however, the kerb has been largely removed by stone-robbing for adjacent field-walls.

RCAHMS 1975, visited June 1969.

Measured Survey (1969)

The cairn was surveyed by RCAHMS in 1969. The plan was redrawn in ink but it was not published.
