Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Local tradition maintains that Lady Douglas, wife of Sir George Henry Scott-Douglas of Springwood, designed Nos 1 and 2 Maxwellheugh Terrace. Dating to around 1863, this single-storeyed double cottage is built in red sandstone rubble and features contrasting stonework around the windows and quoins (corner stones). Other decorative features include the 'gingerbread' gables, decorative structures which are further mirrored in the gabled attic dormer window.
