Ploughlands is a former farmhouse which probably dates from the later part of the eighteenth century. Situated immediately adjacent to the Ploughlands road bridge, the ruinous remains of the steading range lie to the rear of the house.
The house is a two-storeyed building constructed in a plain, traditional style with few embellishments. Built of rubble masonry, most of the building is covered in painted harl with the margins and sills painted a contrasting colour.
Ploughlands stands in a rectangular walled garden; when the 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map was published in the 1860s this was laid out along formal lines, divided into three sections.
