Archaeology Notes

NM83SE 7 centred 8598 3015.

(Approx. NM 8598 3015) Rock cave found 1890 40ft above sea level at the foot of the cliffs behind the Oban Distillery buildings.

Information from the Oban Times, 26 August 1933.

Distillery Cave: Owing to various accidents, the stratigraphy and character of the deposits could not be determined, but it seems that an Obanian layer was broached. The remains of four adults and four children were found in this cave, but their relation to the deposit could not be ascertained.

A D Lacaille 1954.

Distillery Cave: destroyed by blasting. Apparently the back of the distillery was built on top of the site.

OS 6"map, annotated by Dr Ivor Campbell, 1933.

The material from the Distillery Cave is on display in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS, Accession no. HL 381-9) with that of other Oban Caves, and is, therefore, considered to be Obanian.

Information from NMAS.

Unable to site more accurate than the reference in Authy.

Visited by OS (W D J) 3 December 1964.
