No 1 The Square is a large three-storeyed building, L-shaped on plan, which extends onto Abbey Row. Probably built in the mid-eighteenth century, this building underwent a number of alterations in the mid-nineteenth century.
Approaching from The Square, one sees the pilastered shop front which was inserted into the ground floor, probably in the mid-nineteenth century. The upper floors are faced with painted ashlar, and the windows have raised margins. The frontage to Abbey Row is pedimented and rendered. It was originally symmetrical but the symmetry has been eroded by the mid-nineteenth-century alterations, including the enlargement of a number of windows and the insertion of an off-centre doorway on the first floor and an associated flight of railed steps.
