Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Nos 3-4 The Square is a three-storeyed tenement, which was probably built in the mid-eighteenth century. The building appears to have undergone considerable additions around 1890. Like most tenements on The Square, the ground floor has been converted for shop premises, while the upper floors have been rendered. However, it is the windows looking onto The Square which are the distinctive feature of this building. The first-floor window is 'tripartite', divided into three equal parts by two stone mullions, while the second-storey window is 'bipartite' or divided into two. Photographs taken before the rebuilding of 1890 show that the building had a similar appearance to Nos 1-3 Woodmarket, which also dates to the mid-eighteenth century.
