(NM 8365 3946) Cairn (NR)

OS 1:10,000 map, (1975)

Near the north end of a rocky ridge, about 365 metres SW of the cairn NM83NW 1, is a largely turf-covered cairn measuring 14.6 metres in diameter and 1.4 metres in height. No kerb stones are visible, but in the SW quadrant a long thin slab measuring 1 metre by 0.4 metres, and 0.15 metres in thickness protrudes above the cairn material. It is clearly dislodged, and may have formed part of a cist.

RCAHMS 1975, visited May 1968.

As described.

Surveyed at 1:2500 scale.

Visited by OS (R D) 28 November 1971.

Activities

Field Visit (May 1968)

NM 836 394. The other cairn, 365 m SW of NM83NW 1, is situated near the N end of a rock ridge at a height of about 30 m OD. Measuring 14.6 m in diameter and 1'4 m in height, it is almost completely turf-covered. No kerb-stones are visible, but in the SW quadrant a long thin slab, measuring 1.0m in length, 0.4 m in breadth and 0.15 m in thickness, can be seen protruding above the cairn material. Although clearly dislodged, its size and shape suggest that it may originally have formed part of a cist.

RCAHMS 1975, visited May 1968.
