Standing Building Recording (1 April 2016)
NJ 69206 63952 A standing building survey was undertaken, 1 April 2016, on the shell of a range of buildings used throughout the 20th century as a smithy, this usage apparently dating to before the 1st Edition OS map of 1866, which labels them as ‘Smithy’. However, two of the structures had been built in 1793 and 1796 respectively as Meal Stores built by the town council to store grain for distribution to the poor in times of hardship. The street façades of these stores remained, each with their original doorway with loft door above.
