Archaeology Notes

NO79NW 71 74302 96241

NO 7430 9624 An archaeological watching brief was maintained, on the 16th and 21st of February 2006, during the construction of new pathway at Crathes. Three sections of new pathway observed were at Crathes, on the south side of the A93 and adjacent to the dismantled Deeside Railway.

Path 1 This short stretch of path was located c70m NW of Nether Mills of Crathes and almost on the line of the dismantled railway (NO 7549 9662).

Path 2 was excavated as an access route for work to be carried out on the other paths.

Path 3 started c.25m W of the old Milton of Crathes Railway Bridge (NO 7430 9624) and continued west for c.114m ending at the entrance to Milton of Crathes. At a point c.15m from where it began, it crossed what was probably the old mill lade which was culverted and flows NE-SW under the A93.

No flints or other archaeological features or finds were evident.
