NM 7532 1202. Enclosure, 150 yards SE of fort NM71SE 1; circle of boulders adjacent to each other, 33 feet in diameter.

Mr and Mrs J Hunter 1967.

Irene Maclachlan of Ardinamir, who informed Mr and Mrs Hunter of this site, pointed out several scattered boulders under thick bracken. They do not form a circle and appear to be natural.

RCAHMS agree probably natural.

Activities

Field Visit (31 March 2022)

NM71SE 14 75307 12015

This circular enclosure is situated on a terrace 65m ESE of the fort at Ballycastle (NM71SE 1). It measures about 10m in diameter within a wall defined by a single line of edge-set boulders. A second similar enclosure lies 22m to the ESE (NM 75337 12008) and measures 6.5m in diameter overall. Neither enclosure resembles the remains of a prehistoric house, and they are more likely related to the use of this rough uncultivated ground for pasture.

Visited by HES Archaeological Survey (GF Geddes and D Bratt), 31 March 2022
