Listed Buildings Area Survey (12 October 2011)

The West Gates, possibly designed by Sir William Bruce for the 2nd Earl of Panmure in the late C17th. The Panmures forfeited their estates due to their support of the 'Old Pretender', James Stewart in 1715 with the 4th Earl of Panmure escaping to France in 1716. By the late C18, the estate passed to relatives, the Earls of Dalhousie. The West Gates are said to have remined closed since that date awaiting the return of a Stewart Prince.
