Lathallan, Walled Garden

Walled garden. Flat-coped brick and squared rubble with deep concave arc to W extending into screen wall at outer angles, and serpentine curve to E. Pedestrian opening to approximate centre of S wall. Low brick walls to S elevation of N wall (remains of glass houses) with squared rubble wall behind and panelled timber door to pedestrian opening with droved margins and brick relieving arch; remains of potting sheds to N elevation.

The walled garden, although breached to the NE was largely in good condition at time of listing (2003). A late 19th century photograph shows its remarkable plan, as well as glass houses, and espaliered fruit trees to S elevations of both N and S walls. Bricks were produced locally at both Whitecross and Candie. Lathallan House (listed separately), originally known as Laurence (or Lawrence) Park, was built in 1826 and designed by Thomas Hamilton.
