(NM 4285 5192) Fort (NR)

OS 1:10000 map (1976)

Fort, Torr a' Mhanaich: This fort (first noted by OS (DWR) 9 May 1974) is situated on the SE end of the summit of Torr a' Mhanaich, a wooded rocky ridge, which rises to a height of 15m OD immediately W of the former manse at Dervaig. Except on the SW, where there is a cliff up to 6m high, access to the summit is relatively easy, a convenient approach being provided by a narrow sloping ascent which leads obliquely upward through a natural break in the rock-face on the W.

The fort measures internally about 27m from NW to SE by a maximum of 26m transversely, and has been defended by a single wall now reduced to a grass-grown spread of rubble, in which a few outer facing-stones remain in position as indicated on the plan. There is no trace of walling visible along the SW side, but the height of the rock-face may have reduced, if not removed, the need for such a substantial structure in this sector. The entrance is on the NW, and two of the stones that form the lowest course of the SW side-wall of the passage are still in position.

Activities

Watching Brief (29 May 2006 - 10 February 2008)

NM 4285 5186 Two watching briefs were undertaken on 29 May 2006 and 10 February 2008 on the site of two proposed houses between the Dun at Torr a Mhainaich (NM45SW 17) and the loch shore. The field had been cultivated for potatoes and the remains of potato trenches and storage pits were identified. A single field drain was also recorded. Three fragments of beach pebble flint, one of which was a waste flake, were recovered from the ploughsoil. The local machine operator commented that flint was frequent in fields around Croig on the W shore of the loch. The ploughsoil also contained ceramics and glass from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Note (11 November 2014 - 23 May 2016)

This small fortification is situated on a wooded knoll immediately W of the old manse at Dervaig. Protected by a sheer rock-face 6m high on the SW, elsewhere a single wall has been drawn around the margin of the summit to enclose an irregular area measuring 27m from NW to SE by up to 26m transversely (0.05ha). The entrance is on the NW, above a sloping ascent that gives relatively easy access up the SW flank of the hillock. The interior is featureless.
