Architecture Notes

NS98NW 11.01 90010 86802

NS 900 868. A sundial stands on the lowest of the garden terraces below the S facade of Airth Castle. It comprises a head, 1'4" square by 1'9" high, and a modern base, the whole now 3'5" high. It has been dialled on all four faces, but the E and W faces also bear grooves suggesting that the head has been used at some time as a weight in a cheese-press. The S face is dated 1690, the N one bears the Elphinstone coat of arms. On top of the head, a square brass dial is lying loose.

RCAHMS 1963, visited 1955.

NS 9000 8680. The sundial is as described.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (J P) 17 January 1974.
