Activities

Photographic Survey (July 2017)

Westness House was recorded as part of a record upgrade exercise. Westness House was built for the Traill family in 1792 by John Firth of Kirkwall. It was the principal house on the estate until Trumland House was built in 1872-3 for Lieutenant-General Frederick Traill-Burroughs to the designs of David Bryce. Westness House with 6,000 acres of shooting was leased by Thomas and Theodosia Middlemore in 1895. They made various minor alterations and many of the fittings being ordered from Morris & Co. In 1898 the Middlemore's bought the Melsetter Estate and relinquished their lease of Westness in 1900. (STG HES)
