Accessing Scotland's Past Project

This lodge was built in 1865 to serve the original Charterhall House, which was replaced in the 1960s. Designed by the Edinburgh architect John Lessels, the lodge is situated to the south-east of Charterhall, near the airfield.

In common with many of the estate buildings the lodge is built of cream sandstone masonry and has a slated roof. It also has a number of interesting features, including the use of distinctive fish-scale slating on the roof, and iron finials on the roof and gables.

A plaque bearing the letters RT is set in a gable on the entrance front of the lodge. The letters refer to Richard Trotter, who owned Charterhall from 1825.
