Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Main Street in Swinton runs in a roughly south-west to north-east direction, and dates from the earliest days of the planned village, which replaced an earlier informal collection of houses in the late eighteenth century.

Early maps show that development took place initially in the area which lay between The Green and the church to the north-east, and some late eighteenth-century cottages still survive on Main Street. During the nineteenth century, more buildings were erected on the stretch that lay to the south-west of The Green.
