Accessing Scotland's Past Project

The walled garden to the north-east of Stainrigg House was built in the first half of the nineteenth century.

Roughly rectangular in shape, the garden is divided into two sections. A brick-lined rubble masonry wall surrounds the larger part, while iron railings on a low wall enclose the smaller section. Both parts of the garden are still laid out along the same formal patterns that are indicated by the 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, published in the mid-nineteenth century.

A brick potting shed attached to the inner wall was probably constructed at the same time as the garden itself, but a greenhouse depicted on the 1st edition map no longer stands.
