Archaeology Notes

NJ31SW 134 3138 1290

Formerly entered as Watermill (possible).

There are a mill building, a lade and a dam on the W of the steeply-cut gully of the Relaquheim Burn. The mill is much dilapidated and obscured by a later drystone dyke that runs across its W side from N to S. It measures about 3.5m from N to S by 2.6m transversely within a rubble-faced wall 0.8m in thickness and up to 0.4m in height.

The lade is visible as a narrow drain-like groove on the W of the drystone wall, and runs for about 20m N to a natural hollow. This may mark the location of a mill-pond, and a scatter of rubble beside the burn may be the remains of the dam.

Visited by RCAHMS (PJD), 28th June 2001.
