Archaeology Notes

NH63NW 73.03 6117 3423

An enclosure, and a mill pond with dam were noted during a forestry Survey at Clune Hill. The enclosure bank average about 0.5m in height but stands up to 1m in height in places. There are elements of drystone walling in places, notably on the W and SE and quarry pits in the vicinity indicate that construction depended upon available materials. The enclosure is incomplete on the S where it is obscured by the mill pond and it unclear if the enclosure is contemporary with the dam or predates it. The mill pond is recorded on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1875, sheet xix). The dam survives as a bank, 4m wide at its base narrowing to 1m in height at the top and standing 1m in height. The sluice mechanism has been largely washed out though a few large stones and flat timbers indicate its position. A concrete overflow is situated 0.8m above the current water level and probing suggests that the pond bottom is, at least 0.7m below the present surface silt. There is a boat lying in the silt.
