Archaeology Notes

NM26SW 23 203 603.

S of Gallanach and Arinabost, among the Cliad sandhills (Claid Bay: NM 1960), between the road and the sea, is extensive tract of broken sand, containing many comparatively level spaces. Here, hammer-stones were specially common and occasionally very large; a bone borer, thick at one end and well pointed at the other, a little pottery, including simple patterns of plain or dotted lines, and a few flints, including scrapers, were also found. Only in one spot, close to a small kitchen-midden, was flint at all plentful.

E Beveridge 1903.

The Clain sandhills are centered at NM 203 603. They are mainly turf-covered and Beveridge's site could not be traced. The only items noted were two fragments of boulder walling (of uncertain date and purpose) at NM1994 5999 and a turf-covered sandy mound at NM 2001 5993 showing some stone content and measuring about 8.0m in diameter and 0.7m high.
