(NM 1769 5294) Dun (NR) (rems of)

OS 1:10,000 map, (1976).

Dun Ghortain.

Visited by OS (R L) 1 July 1972.

Dun, Gorton: This dun occupies the summit of a small rocky knoll, 17m high, on the E side of Loch Gorton. It has measured about 18m by 6m internally, but the wall (A on plan) now survives only round the N half of the summit area. For the most part the facing-stones have disappeared, but short stretches of outer face, not more than two courses high, can be seen in situ on both the E and W. A gap in the wall debris on the latter side, opening on to a narrow terrace, probably marks the site of the original entrance. On the N an outer wall (B) was built for additional defence round the margin of the broad terrace that lies below the dun. This wall has been largely destroyed, but a few outer facing-stones are visible on the E side and small amounts of core material can be traced elsewhere, as marked on the plan.

RCAHMS 1980, visited 1975
