Archaeology Notes

NM15NE 4 1980 5654.

(NM 1980 5653) Dun (NR).

OS 1"map, (1947)

The dun on the summit of Druim an Airidh Fhada consists of the remains of a distinct circular mound, 20 yds across and 10' high, capped by an inner stone wall with a few large stones in its base, enclosing an area 15 yds in diameter, on which lie many smaller stones.

E Beveridge 1903.

A cairn, not a dun, comprising a peat-covered stony mound, c. 1.8m high. A kerb of contiguous boulders can be seen around the edge giving an overall diameter of 14.5m. The centre, apparently undisturbed, is surmounted by a modern marker cairn.

Traces of a wall are visible leading to the W from the NW side of the cairn. This is one of several extensive walls showing intermittently through the peat on the hillside to the W, which are probably contemporary with several shielings in the vicinity. To the SE of the cairn are traces of another wall.

Visited by OS (R L) 26 June 1972.

(NM 1980 5654) Cairn (NR)

OS 1:10,000 map, (1976)

On the summit of Druim nan Airigh Fada, a site that commands extensive views in all directions, there is a peat-covered cairn measuring about 14.5m in diameter and 1.8m in height. Many large kerb-stones are visible round the perimeter, particularly on the E side where they measure up to 1.75m in length by 0.8m in height and 0.35m in thickness. There are indications of field-walls, built of stones set on edge, beyond the E and W side of the cairn, but whether these are also of prehistoric date cannot be determined without excavation.

RCAHMS 1980, visited 1974.
