Archaeology Notes

NM15NE 19 1896 5920.

There is a cairn called Carnan mhic an Righ by Campbell, 50 yds N of Grishipoll farmhouse (NM 189 591). Beveridge describes it as a small mound, outside diameter 15', inside 7 1/2'. According to local tradition it was opened about 1765 by three Norwegians in the presence of the laird of Coll. They took the relics discovered home with them, claiming them to belong to a fellow-countryman.

E Beveridge 1903; Information from J G Campbell.

At NM 1898 5922 on an E-facing slope is a turf-covered stony mound, c 7.0m in diameter and 0.4m high, with its centre hollowed. It is an unlikely situation for a cairn and its purpose is uncertain.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (R L) 18 June 1972

This grass-covered cairn measures about 7m in diameter and 1m in height. A large hollow in the centre is presumably the result of the excavation conducted by E D Clarke in 1797; this showed that the cairn was composed of stones, but no burial was found (W Otter 1825). The account of the excavation given by Beveridge (E Beveridge 1903) is less accurate.

RCAHMS 1980, visited 1974; E Beveridge 1903; W Otter 1825.
