Activities

Watching Brief (10 January 2017 - 17 January 2017)

NX 69680 53984 A watching brief was maintained, 10–17 January 2017, during site clearance and levelling works in preparation for the construction of a garage. The site lies c100m W of Tongland Abbey, and possibly bounds the former access way into the abbey precinct. The place name ‘Meikleyett’ in the immediate vicinity of the site may refer to the abbey’s former gatehouse. Whilst the lower courses of the walls of a small 19th-century Poor’s House Cottage were revealed by the work, there was no evidence of any earlier structures. However, several worked stones of probable medieval date, showing simple roll moulding or other minor architectural details, were recovered. Previously, a carved

sandstone fragment in the form of a leaf was found in the garden of the property.
