Field Visit (August 1975)
The turf covered remains of this small detached building lie immediately to the S of a track which runs through the deserted early 19th century crofting township of Mannel, and about 22m E of the ruinous croft-house and steading with which it was probably associated. It is of subrectangular plan and measures 7.8m in length from E to W by 6.7m transversely over walls varying in thickness between 1.4m and 1.7m. The external angles are rounded, and the walls , which survive to a maximum height of about 1.1m, are evidently constructed of rubble with an earthen core. The entrance is place in the E wall. The W half of the interior is occupied by a raised platform which incorporates the remains of a straight flue and a fairly well preserved kiln-bowl faced with neatly coursed rubble masonry. The flue measures some 1.5m in length, while the kiln-bowl is about 0.6m in depth and 1.4m in maximum diameter.
