Victoria Place, c.1840

Beautifully scaled lane to Rosemount Park (lovely views to the palace) leads behind some delightful villas; the first an idiosyncratic, three-bay, two-storey house in beautifully polished ashlar, curious window and door surrounds, geometric fanlight and lying (horizontal) paned glass, its character destroyed by a stuck-on sun room. Douglas Cottage, built as the Cottage School, is an enchanting Tudor pavilion overlooking the canal. Hood-moulded and stone mullioned windows. Proud octagonal chimneystacks.

Taken from "West Lothian: An Illustrated Architectural Guide", by Stuart Eydmann, Richard Jaques and Charles McKean, 2008. Published by the Rutland Press http://www.rias.org.uk
