Archaeology Notes (11 July 2000)

NN64NE 16 6651 4839

Two buildings, a dyke and a possible retting pond situated to the W of Invervar Lodge were recorded in advance of re-scheduling at Invervar (NN64NE 8.00) by Historic Scotland. A small building or hut (NMRS MS 1039/32, no.5), abutting the N side of a stone dyke, is situated at NN 6651 4839. It measures 5.5m from E to W by 3.5m over turf-clad stony banks. The dyke on the S side can be traced intermittently over 100m from E to W stopping just short of the mill lade (NN64NE 8.01). It survives as a line of boulders in places and elsewhere as a stony bank. It is generally 0.8m wide and 0.4m high although sections still stand up to 0.8m in height. The track (NMRS MS 1039/32, no.8) leading up from Invervar passes through the dyke and continues northwards. A subrectangular sunken structure (NMRS MS 1039/32, no.3), measuring 3m by 4m and defined by large boulders on the S and W and a broad stony bank on the E and N is situated at NN 6649 4842. The interior is wet and boggy suggesting that it might be a retting pond associated with the lint mill rather than a building. The much disturbed remains of a further structure, reduced to banks and mounds, lies to the SW of the lade at NN 6648 4837 near the location of a building depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire 1867, sheet xlvii). At this date the area is named as Easter Invervar.

This scattered group of features may represent the last vestiges of a township at Easter Invervar, parts of which are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire 1867, sheet xlvii) which was replaced by the 19th century shooting lodge (NN64NE 11).
