ABERCORN
A hallowed spot, secluded in bosky privacy, Abercorn slumbers as a homely hamlet of Hopetoun. Here was a 7th-century monastery, seat of a bishopric 681-5 (for 200 years as a foundation belonging to Lindisfarne Priory). The kirk may occupy the site. A Grahame castle arose on the far bank of the Hope Burn but leaves only archaeological evidence. A tiny estate village, on the ancient coast road from Queensferry to Linlithgow, of cottages, houses, high walls, higher trees and - dominating everything - a substantial L-plan Scots revival manse, c.1855 (
