Archaeology Notes

Rectangular platform of massive construction, 2.4m by 3.4m.

Visited by OS 30 August 1973.

What may be a peat-stack stand is situated on N-facing ground in the bottom of Skipisdale. Square on plan, it measures about 3m across and 0.3m in height. The stones forming the N side are coursed, but the W side is formed by a single horizontal slab, and the E side a row of upright stones. No edging was detected on the S, despite probing. Two stones lie roughly 2m distant from the NE and SE corners respectively and appear to have been removed from the edges of the stand. There is a large flat, heel-shaped slab in the interior, which may have fallen into the body of the stand. The stand is surrounded by relict peat cuttings.
