Pumpherston (South Village)

Built to house workers from the highly profitable oil works: those who could, stayed somewhere better like Mid Calder. The rest remained in miners' rows (originally brick, now harled) running at right angles from the road. The contrast between the condition of Pumpherston and that of Livingston New Town, barely yards to the west, is truly awesome. The adjacent village school, standing watchfully on the corner, will be replaced by a modern school at Drunshoreland as part of the proposed major expansion of Pumpherston and neighbouring Uphall Station. West Calder Co-operative, the only three-storey building in Pumpherston, occupies a corner site, its stumpy clock-tower defying decay.
