Strip And Record (September 2022)

NT 37784 64038 An archaeological investigation was undertaken in September 2022, prior to development at 54 Dewarton.

The development area was subject to a monitored topsoil strip and the appraisal of three former agricultural sheds occupying the property, two of which had been demolished due to partial collapse. The site had been previously subject to considerable ground reduction with no in situ deposits over the majority of the development area. This had formerly been a yard and the site was typically covered in type 1 aggregate under 0.20m of introduced topsoil. An underlying membrane was visible directly overlying

natural deposits of grey boulder clay.

Drainage works along the E of the site revealed a light brown sandy loam topsoil up to 0.40m in depth. This overlaid a sandy clay subsoil.

The sheds were of mid-20th-century date and were composed of breezeblocks with corrugated roofs and concrete floors.

No archaeologically significant material or features were observed.
