Sir Basil Spence

Building Notes

Basil Spence and Partners built Mill Lade House for Alfred H Alexander in the mid 1950s. The house, which is encircled by an old mill lade, was built on land formerly belonging to Belford House. It is located on the north side of the Water of Leith, to the west of the Dean Village in Edinburgh.

The building is constructed in cavity brickwork and finished with a combination of harling, red cedar boarding and stone. The two-storey L-plan house has a timber pitched roof covered with Ballachulish slates. The accommodation comprises of three bedrooms, a living room, dining room, bathroom, kitchen and utilities. The living apartments are all located on the upper floors while the lower floors are given over to storage in the north wing and a three-car garage in the south. The main entrance to the property is in the re-entrant angle and there is an additional service entrance in the north wing with external stairs.
