Foot Bridge [NAT]

OS 1:1250 map, 1973.

Footbridge, Addison Road, built c. 1896. A light lattice-girder span, with a simple wrought-iron railing, over the River Kelvin.

J R Hume 1974.

Built as a replacement for the Three Trees Well footbridge (NS 56NE 4909), and on the same piers, this was a pleasant light lattice-girder span with a simple wrought-iron railing, dating from 1886. After suffering many years of neglect, deterioration and eventually closure, it was finally washed away in the floods of December 1994.

It was known at the time as the 'Ha'penny Bridge' as the owner of Kelvinside House, in an effort to deter the Maryhill folk from 'invading his land', charged a most unpopular half-penny toll to cross.

D Boyce 1996.

The bridge formerly carried a footpath across the River Kelvin, which here forms the boundary between the parishes of Glasgow (to the E) and Govan (to the W).

The location assigned to this record defines the centre of the span. The available map evidence indicates that it extends from NS c. 56709 67758 to NS c. 56734 67748.
