Archaeology Notes

NJ90NW 1619 9063 0730

Nothing is visible of this farmsteading, which stood on land now occupied by modern housing on the S side of Mastrick Road. As depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire 1869, sheet lxxv), three long ranges were set around the W, N and E sides of a central yard; another small roofed building stood within the yard, which opened on to a garden immediately to the S. By the end of the 19th century the N and W ranges had been extended to meet at the NW corner of the yard, and the S side had been closed off by the construction of a fourth range connecting the southern ends of the E and W ranges. This left the main access into the yard through the gap in the NE corner. The 2nd edition of the map (1902, sheet lxxv.NW) also shows that the small structure within the yard had been removed by this time.
