Standing Building Recording (12 January 2017 - 13 January 2017)

NT 64308 75231 (NT67NW 97) A programme of work undertaken, 12–13 January 2017, established that the site of 1–4 Pitcox Farm Cottages belongs to two broad phases of construction and subsequent alterations. These correspond to the construction of the cottages in 1836 and their extension towards the N in the c1890s. Further smaller undated alterations involved minor interior refurbishments and some roofing repairs. The multiple evidence of graffiti in the structures also testify to their use in the 20th century as military accommodation, including the Royal Air Force and

the 8th Royal Scots, and later by many itinerant agricultural labourers, who used the buildings until the mid-1940s. The original four cottages represent a remarkable survival of single-storey 3-bay cottar houses from the improvement period in almost unchanged form. The extensions are

equally important, demonstrating the drive for housing improvements at the time.
