Archaeology Notes

NJ27SW 8023 c. 239 712

N57 43.5 W3 16.7

NLO: Lossiemouth [name: NJ 235 705].

(Classified as wooden lugger, in ballast: date of loss cited as 28 February 1907). Vesper: this vessel stranded [at the] pierhead [pier head], Lossiemouth [harbour]. Capt. Edwards.

No registered. Built 1891. 28 tons [unspecified].

(Location of loss cited as N57 43.50 W3 16.75).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. The relatively late date of this loss suggests that it occurred in the entrance to the New (Branderburgh) Harbour (NJ27SW 17.00) at Lossiemouth, which dates from 1839, rather than in the predecessor (old) harbour (NJ27SW 18) at the mouth of the River Lossie.

The remains of the vessel were presumably removed without delay from this constrained location.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 21 February 2002.
