Archaeology Notes

NT47SE 8 4617 7442.

Dovecot, Elvingston: The cylindrical dovecot near the mansion is probably of 18th century date (D C Bailey and M C Tindall 1963). It has a dressed stone wall 2 ft 9 ins thick with two string courses and a battlement top; the roof is hidden but the glover stands out. There are two small round windows; pigeons can enter through the glover. In the interior are 764 ashlar nesting boxes and a revolving ladder, all in good order.

C McWilliam 1978; J Whitaker 1938

NT 4617 7442. This ornamental dovecot is as described by the previous authorities.
